COLORADO SPRINGS – The Colorado School of Mines Athletic Communications office was named the 2025-26 J.W. Campbell/Con Marshall Sports Information Department of the Year last week by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).

The award is presented annually to the sports information department in the RMAC with the greatest impact during the most recent academic year. Each of the league's 15 sports information/communications departments provided their top three choices for the award. Departments were not allowed to vote for themselves.

Last week's announcement marks the third such honor in the last five years for the Oredigger communications team, and the fifth since 2016-17. Overall, Mines has won the J.W. Campbell/Con Marshall award nine times since its inception in 2001-02. Current Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Tim Flynn has headed six of those departments. Other Oredigger winners include Colin Bonnicksen (2012-13), Jeff Duggan (2008-09), and Greg Murphy (2003-04).

"I want to congratulate Tim, Patrick (Murphy), and Sam (Boender), as their peers have again recognized their efforts as the top of the athletic communications field," RMAC Associate Commissioner Cody Bush said. "Winning this award for the fifth time since 2016-17 is a testament to the high level of commitment they make to promoting both Orediggers and RMAC athletics, as well as the impact their efforts have in helping their peers promote their teams."

Throughout the 2025-26 academic year, Flynn, along with assistants Sam Boender and Patrick Murphy, covered nearly 300 Oredigger competitions including staffing and coverage for nearly 150 home events. Competitions on Mines' campus, supported by nearly 40 student workers and contractors, were headlined by the 2025 RMAC Women's Soccer Tournament, the first two rounds of the 2025 NCAA women's soccer tournament, and the 2026 NCAA Super Region VI Wrestling Championships. Highlights from those competitions included four RMAC team titles, five teams finishing top-10 in the nation, and 11 teams advancing to NCAA Championship competition which fueled Mines' seventh straight top-10 finish in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings, placing seventh nationally.

"I am so proud of our team for earning this award," said Flynn. "Their hard work is instrumental in connecting our amazing student-athletes to our fans, and it takes many people – professional, student, and gameday staff – to make it happen."

In addition to team accomplishments, Flynn, Boender, and Murphy promoted numerous individual accolades as well. Topping the list were three NCAA National Champions in Cody Thompson (wrestling), Emily LaMena (women's track & field), and Grace Strongman (women's track & field). Overall, the Orediggers had 45 individuals and seven relays collect 61 all-America awards. Mines also boasted 69 all-region honors and 146 All-RMAC performers. Academically, 248 Orediggers were recognized at the RMAC level with 42 CSC Academic All-District honorees, seven CSC Academic All-Americans, and five RMAC Academic Players of the Year. The cross country, track & field, and at-large CSC Academic All-America teams have yet to be released.
