COLORADO SPRINGS – Colorado School of Mines baseball outfielder
Alex Dunagan has been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's (RMAC) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year – the league's top academic award.
Dunagan claims the award following a superlative season in which he was named CSC First-Team Academic All-America, RMAC Baseball Academic Player of the Year, D2CCA Second-Team All-Region, RMAC All-Tournament, CSC Academic All-District, and RMAC First-Team All-Academic. The Texan also won the RMAC Summit Award and was named Mines' Male Academic Athlete of the Year at the Blaster Awards. He's the second straight Oredigger to win RMAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year after track & field star Hunter Potrykus won it in 2025.
On the field, Dunagan batted .36 with 54 runs on 73 hits including 25 doubles, two triples, and 12 home runs with 73 RBI. He also walked 17 times, was hit by a pitch 10 times, and stole nine bases on 11 attempts as Mines made a run to the RMAC Tournament championship game. The Cy-Fair High School graduate finished the season tied for #1 in the nation in total doubles and ranked #23 in the nation in RBI while leading the RMAC in both categories. His senior-season production also helped put his name in the program record book 12 times. Dunagan now holds the program record for doubles in a game, triples in a game, and RBI in a game. He's also #3 in Oredigger history for doubles in a season, #2 in single-season RBI, and #5 for total bases in a season. Academically, Dunagan completed his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering while touting an unblemished, 4.0 GPA.
The RMAC Male and Female Scholar-Athlete Awards are the highest academic honors given by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. A student-athlete must have completed at least two academic terms at a member institution while maintaining a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, and participated in an RMAC-sponsored championship sport; nominees come from any of the RMAC's sponsored sports. Dunagan was one of 14 nominees for the 2026 award, joined by Adams State's Benjamin Tonnessen, Black Hills State's Cam Lowe, Colorado Christian's Matthew Storer, Colorado Mesa's Izaak Siefken, Chadron State's Brodie Eisenbraun, CSU Pueblo's Zach Rakowsky, MSU Denver's Nick McNeil, New Mexico Highlands' Ivan Smith, South Dakota Mines' Owen Johnson, UCCS' Nick Walker, Western Colorado's Chance Wiening, and Westminster's Benjamin Weber.
Dunagan is the fourth Oredigger overall to win the prestigious honor. Gokul Natesan (men's basketball) won the first-ever RMAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in 2017. Duncan Fuehne (cross country/track & field) claimed the distinction in 2023. As mentioned above, Hunter Potrykus (track & field) won it in 2025. Dunagan will be honored as part of the RMAC Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet on July 9 at COS City Hub in Colorado Springs.
