The Mines Men's Club Soccer team opened its home schedule with a strong 3-0 victory over the University of Denver on Saturday, Sept. 19, before its Sunday matchup against Air Force was postponed.
Mines and Denver battled through a competitive opening 30 minutes, with both teams creating pressure and chances. The Orediggers broke through late in the first half when Toby Johnson delivered a free kick from the wing, finding Lucas Kolp behind the DU defense. Kolp headed the ball into the side netting to give Mines a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Mines controlled the midfield in the second half and continued to generate scoring opportunities. Tom Clemens received a ball behind the Denver backline, dribbled past his defender and fired a shot off the crossbar and into the net to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Orediggers added another goal following quick combination play between Graham Shoaps and James Hutson. Shoaps' shot from outside the box struck the post, but Hutson was there to finish the rebound and make it 3-0. Mines controlled the remainder of the match to secure the shutout victory.
Mines was scheduled to face Air Force on Sunday, Sept. 20, but the contest was postponed after the assigned referees did not arrive. A rescheduled date has not yet been announced.
