Mines Men’s Rugby Falls to Montana State 56–14 in D2 Home Opener

GOLDEN, Colo. — Mines Men's Rugby battled through a hard-fought D2 home opener Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell 56–14 to Montana State at Mines.

The Orediggers faced a strong Montana State squad and got off to a difficult start, allowing the Bobcats to establish momentum early. Mines continued to compete, however, and found its footing late in the first half as the Orediggers were able to maintain possession and put together sustained phases of attack.

That pressure resulted in two tries before halftime. Nils Jerger crossed after a successful line-out maul, while Jack Thome added a score from the back line. Will Skaar converted both tries to give Mines 14 points on the afternoon.

Mines continued to fight throughout the second half, competing through the final whistle against a physical Montana State side. While the Orediggers were unable to close the gap, the match provided valuable experience as Mines continues its transition into D2 competition.

The loss also gives Mines plenty to build on heading into the week. The Orediggers will have an opportunity to address mistakes, sharpen their execution and continue developing as a team before returning to competition next weekend.

Mines will take the lessons from Saturday's match back to practice this week with plenty of work ahead and plenty to improve upon.

On to the next.
