HAYWARD, Calif. – Mines volleyball rode its offense to a 3-0 victory against Westmont Saturday in their final match at the Cal State East Bay Invitational.
Naomi Romslo led the team with 11 kills while adding a service ace and three digs.
Cadence McDonald and
Jenna McLaughlin powered out eight error-free kills apiece with McDonald hitting .615 and McLaughlin hitting .444. On defense, McDonald and
Abbie O'Shay notched three blocks each. McLaughlin and
Sophia Davila combined for four total blocks. McLaughlin rounded out her game resume with two service aces which were matched by
Francesca Nuzzo. She and Davila registered a total of 18 digs.
Kaiya Gilbert's final line featured 33 assists, six digs, two kills, and one service ace.
As a team, Mines (7-1) posted an attack percentage of .323. Westmont (2-5) hit just .148 and only had one service ace. The Orediggers collected seven service aces and five blocks. They also converted 42 assists into 55 kills and extended rallies by grinding out 45 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orediggers dominated the first set, 25-15. Eight combined kills from Walden and Romslo along with two aces by McLaughlin fueled the lopsided win. Game two was the most competitive frame of the match with 15 ties and six lead changes. Extra points were required as well, but Mines prevailed, 27-25, after McDonald's third kill of the set clinched the victory. Westmont was seemingly drained after the big push. Mines took advantage and completed the sweep with a 25-16 win. Five different Orediggers had multiple kills in the last game for a balanced attack in the final action of the weekend for Mines.

- Davila recorded the first multi-block match of her collegiate career. She also had a career-high nine digs.
