Frequently Asked Questions

Who can come on ORC trips?
Only students, staff, and faculty can participate in ORC trips.
For certain certification courses, we do allow the general public to participate (NOLS WFA, NOLS WFR, AMGA Climbing Wall and Single Pitch Courses, etc.).

Why should I sign up for an ORC trip?
For an incredibly college friendly price, you get: Gear, guides, food, transportation, not to mention forming connections with other Mines students and the beautiful outdoors of Colorado!

How much experience do I need for ORC trips?
Most of our trips are geared so someone with little or no experience can have a great time, in other words, no experience!

Will food be included?
On our overnight trips, food will be included in the listed price.

Will I need my own gear?
The ORC will provide any gear that is necessary to accomplish the goals of the trip (backpacking gear, bikes, ski boots, etc). Non-technical gear like clothing or hiking shoes is typically the participants responsibility. And, if you already have your own gear, you're always welcome to use that!

Will I need to find my own lodging for multi day trips like the Utah Ski Trip?
No, all lodging is arranged and included in the listed price.

Do I need to provide my own transportation?
No, all trips include transportation from the ORC.

If I bring my own gear do I get a discount on the trip?
No, you are more than welcome to bring your own gear on ORC trips but that will not affect the cost of the trip in anyway. All trips must be paid in full, regardless of personal gear, in order to officially register.

Where do your trips typically go?
Our day trips explore the mountains and canyons within an hour of Golden, but we also offer weekend trips to Rocky Mountain National Park and weeklong excursions to Utah and beyond. Interested in going further? Check out the Global Adventures FAQ!

How experienced are your trip leaders?
Any guide assigned to a trip has a plethora of personal experience that uniquely qualifies them to lead that trip whether it be backpacking or ice climbing. In addition to this, all of our guides have at least a WFA (Wilderness First Aid) and most have a WFR (Wilderness First Responder), AIARE 1, and an AIARE Companion Rescue. Our whitewater guides hold a Swiftwater Rescue Certification as well. Our assistant director, Kevin Langlois, is an AMGA certified guide with a lifetime of experience guiding on technical terrain.
