Tyler Kimble completed his 18th season as the head men's golf coach at Colorado School of Mines in 2023-24.
Under Kimble, Mines has enjoyed the longest sustained period of success in the program's long history, including RMAC Tournament Championships in 2012, 2018, and 2019; the regular-season title in 2016-17; and three RMAC runner-up finishes in 2013, 2015, and 2016. In that span, Mines has had six all-Americans and 13 all-region picks while making nine NCAA Super Regional appearances and one trip to the NCAA Championships in 2012. Kimble was the 2017 recipient of the CGAA D-II Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to college golf.
Before the shortening of the 2019-20 season due to COVID-19, Kimble had Mines on track for another historic season. The Orediggers peaked at #11 in the Golfstat team rankings and ended ranked #19 in the GCAA Coaches' Poll, winning the RJGA South Central Preview and MSU Texas Invitational in the fall and heading into the spring as the favorite to threepeat in the RMAC. For the first time under Kimble, Mines had two all-America selections in the same season as both Tim Amundson and Preston Smith were recognized by PING/GCAA.
In 2018-19, Kimble earned his second straight RMAC Coach of the Year honor after guiding Mines to a repeat RMAC Tournament title - the first time in 50 years that Mines won two in a row. With four all-RMAC selections including two-time All-American George Markham, the Orediggers ran off four straight tournament wins in the spring to qualify for NCAA Regionals once again.Â
In 2017-18, Mines captured the RMAC Tournament title for the second time led by runner-up George Markham and all-RMAC picks Markham, Nic Beno, Jordan Bass, and Tim Amundson. Kimble was named the RMAC Coach of the Year as the Orediggers went on to finish just two strokes off the cut for nationals at NCAA Regionals. Markham won the NCAA West/South Central Regional individual title and became the first Oredigger in program history to earn an at-large individual berth to the NCAA Championships, where he finished 20th. During the regular season, Mines had plenty of team success, finishing third or better in four tournaments including wins at the Bob Writz Invitational and RMAC Championships.
The 2016-17 season saw a young and hungry Mines squad win a share of the RMAC regular-season title as a lineup with only one senior blazed through the fall with a win in the RMAC #1 and runner-up finish in the RMAC #2. Led by all-region #1 George Markham, Mines advanced to the NCAA Super Regional Championships for the seventh time under Kimble, with Markham, freshman Tim Amundson, and senior Taylor MacKay earning all-RMAC honors. Mines individuals won two tournaments during the season as Markham was the medalist at the Maverick Invitational and freshman Nic Beno won the Wildcat Classic.
During the 2013-14 season, Kimble's squad claimed just the third No. 1 national ranking in Colorado School of Mines Athletics history when his team held down the top spot in the Golfstat.com Head-to-Head Computer Rankings in September, 2013. The squad spent the majority of the year in both the Golfstat and Nike/Golf World Coaches Top 25 poll. The squad captured five team championships during the campaign, including a season-opening win at the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational where the Orediggers set a new program and RMAC record with a three-round score of 831, while also tying the RMAC record and setting a new program mark with a 272 (-16) during the second round. Mines once again took part in the NCAA Division II West/South Central Super Regional and finished in 18th place. Senior Michael Lee was named the RMAC Player of the Year for the second-consecutive year while also earning PING All-South Central Region accolades. Senior Kyle Grassel was named Third Team All-RMAC and First Team Academic All-RMAC, joining junior teammate Jordan Arndt on the latter squad. In all, a total of five golfers were named Academic All-RMAC while the squad earned the program's first-ever RMAC Brechler Award for the best team grade point average in the conference. For the season, Mines posted an 86-68 overall record for a .558 winning percentage. The squad posted a 297.3 stroke average through 32 total rounds of competition and claimed a total of 10 top-five individual finishes and 20 top-10 individual finishes during the season.Â
Kimble led the Orediggers to another banner year at the helm of the program in 2012-13, as the squad spent the entirety of the year inside both the Golfstat.com Head-to-Head Computer Rankings Top 25, as well as the Nike/Golf World Coaches Top 25 Poll. The squad was ranked as high as No. 7 in the Golfstat rankings which set a new program-best mark. Mines recorded four total team titles and amassed eight top-five finishes in a total of 11 events. For his efforts, he was named the RMAC Coach of the Year for the second-straight season. He had five players named Academic All-RMAC, led by Academic Player of the Year honors for sophomore Jordan Arndt, as well as first team honors for Arndt and junior Kyle Grassel, and the pair was also named First Team Academic All-District as well. Arndt joined Lee on the First Team while sophomore John Ahern was named Second Team All-RMAC and Grassel was named Third Team All-RMAC. Following the season, Lee and Arndt were both named PING All-South Central Region. Kimble also led Mines to the No. 1 seed in the region for the second-straight season and the squad posted an 88-34 win-loss record on the year for a .721 winning percentage. The squad posted a 291.7 stroke average through 30 rounds of competition on the year and captured a total of 13 individual top-five finishes, 27 top-10 finishes and 36 top-20 finishes on the year.
Kimble led the Orediggers to the best season in program history during the 2011-12 season, including the school’s first-ever appearance at the NCAA Division II Championships and the program's first conference golf title since the 1968 season. The Orediggers ended the season ranked No. 17 in both the Golfstat.com Head-to-Head computer rankings as well as the Golf World/Nike Division II Coaches' Poll. The squad finished tied for 11th of 20 teams at the NCAA Division II Championships, while senior Jim Knous finished second overall after losing on the first playoff hole for the individual national championship. After leading Mines to its first conference golf title since the 1968 season, Kimble was rewarded by his peers by being named the 2012 RMAC Men's Golf Coach of the Year and was also named the Golf Pride 2012 Central Region Coach of the Year. He led the team to six total team titles during the season and four players were named to the All-RMAC squads (Knous - First Team, Michael Lee - Second Team, Cory Bacon - Third Team, Kyle Grassel - Third Team). Kimble led his squad to the No. 1 ranking in the Central Region as well as a third-place finish in the squad's third-straight appearance at the NCAA Division II West/Central Super Regional.
