GOLDEN, Colo.
– The Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Track & Field teams opened the 2020 Mines Winter Classic & Multi with nine NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks on Friday inside Steinhauer Fieldhouse.

Connor McLean topped the list as he raised his mark in the pole vault to 5.17 meters (16-11.15). It improves his previous mark of 5.10 meters (16-8.75) and ranked #1 in NCAA Division II at the time of his clearance. Connor McLean also produced a personal record in the shot put, heaving it 12.23 meters (40-1.50). Back in the pole vault, Jake Pinkston joined his teammate with a provisional qualifying height of 4.92 meters (16-1.75). He still boasts a season best height of 5.02 meters (16-5.5) which currently ranks #7 in the nation. Overall, Mines dominated the pole vault as the Orediggers took the top five collegiate finishes thanks to Zach Clark, Ben Twombly and Brandon Hinkle.

Men's shot put provided another provisional mark for Mines in the field events. It was Arvid Veidmark IV putting up three tosses over 16.80 meters. He won the entire event with a mark of 16.86 meters (55-3.75). It ranks #2 all-time at Mines and projects to slide into the top 20 in the nation. Veidmark IV proved tops among eight competitors in the shot put field.

On the women's side, field events proved fruitful as well. Sophia Collins won the long jump by leaping 5.81 meters (19-0.75). She moved herself to #2 in the Orediggers' indoor record book and put her name on the NCAA Provisional qualifying list. Kathleen Tomon did the same in the shot put, winning the event with her throw of 13.88 meters (45-6.50). Like Collins, the mark moved Tomon to #2 in the program record book and placed her on the NCAA Provisional list.

The Orediggers also exceled on the track. In the 5,000-meter run, Grant Colligan upped his NCAA time with a raw finish of 14:53.56. With conversions for altitude and track size, it should move Colligan into the top-10 in the nation. It also marked Colligan's first performance on his home track in over two years. Chris Cathcart joined Colligan in the 5K and produced the first NCAA Provisional time of his career, running 15:09.14. On the women's side, Zoe Baker went for the fieldhouse record and came just shy. In the end, Baker posted a raw time of 17:42.80 which projects to improve her season best previously set in December at Grand Valley State.

It was the men's distance medley relay that rounded out Mines' NCAA Provisional marks with an overall time of 10:19.20. Additionally, the heptathlon duo of Hayden Sather and Chase McLean look to join the NCAA Provisional ranks as they sit #1 and #2 after four events. Sather touts a score of 2,843 and Chase McLean boasts 2,686 points. Both lead former national champion Spencer Jahr of Colorado Mesa.
