GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men's basketball program has received a National Letter of Intent from Trey Winbush (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep) to begin playing for the Orediggers in 2011-12, as announced today by CSM Head Coach Pryor Orser.
A 5'11", 180-lb. point guard, Winbush garnered First Team All-Gateway Conference and Student-Athlete of the Week (First Coast News) recognition for the Blue Devils. Furthermore, Winbush started on the West team for the Northeast All-Star Game.
Winbush, who averaged 17.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals per game as a senior at Stanton College Prep, plans to major in Mechanical Engineering at CSM.
"We are thrilled about Trey joining our basketball program here at Colorado School of Mines," said Orser, who was selected as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Orediggers to the RMAC regular-season title in 2010-11. "Trey is a first-class person, an outstanding student and a very good basketball player. He is a skilled true point guard who has outstanding leadership qualities. We feel Trey can help our program maintain the high level of play that we are currently experiencing."
Mines (25-6 overall, 18-4 RMAC) set new single-season program records for overall and conference victories this season and earned the #1 seed for the RMAC Shootout. CSM finished as the runner-up in the RMAC Shootout and went on to qualify for the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament for the second year in a row. The Orediggers, who were ranked 20th in the final 2010-11 NABC Top 25 Poll, were ranked as high as #2 in the Central Region and #18 in the nation this winter.
CSM senior guard Sean Armstrong, who was selected as the RMAC Player of the Year, earned All-American recognition from the Division II Bulletin at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season.
