GOLDEN – A third-period pin by redshirt freshman Justin Frazer in the 10th bout tied up the dual, but visiting CSU-Pueblo captured the victory over the Colorado School of Mines wrestling team on the first tiebreaker criteria by a score of 19-18 at Lockridge Arena in Golden on Friday evening.
Mines (3-7, 0-3 RMAC) has now lost two matches this season on the NCAA's dual tiebreaker criteria (Cal Baptist, 24-23, sixth tiebreaker) with Friday's defeat. CSUP (5-8, 1-2 RMAC) captured the dual victory behind more bout victories with a 6-4 margin, which is the NCAA's first criteria to determine tiebreakers.
The Orediggers got a victory in the second bout of the night with an 8-3 decision by redshirt senior Ryan Swanson at 184 pounds which tied up the score at 3-3 through two matches. The victory was Swanson's 20th of the season and upped his record to 20-10 on the season.
CSUP responded with three straight victories, including a 6-2 victory by top-ranked Jesse Hillhouse at 125 pounds, to stake a 12-3 lead.
Redshirt freshman Robby Schultheis then provided some fireworks with a first-period fall over Jacob Haney which trimmed the ThunderWolves' lead to 12-9 with four matches to go.
Adam Ortivez then squeaked out a 5-4 victory over Isaac Elge at 141 pounds and CSUP added a 6-1 decision by Jimmy Chase over Austin Cordova to move the score to 18-9 with just two matches remaining.
Freshman John Crowley captured his team-leading 22nd victory (22-5) with a 5-1 decision of his own to trim the score to 18-12 in favor of CSUP.
Frazer gutted through two tough periods to a 4-4 tie against Trevor Grant before upping his team lead in falls with a quick move to get Grant on his back for the pin, which tied up the score at 18-18.
Mines will be back at it in just over 12 hours when the squad hosts the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open at Lockridge Arena in Golden on Saturday at 10 a.m.
