GRAND JUNCTION – The Colorado School of Mines wrestling squad once again matched an opponent in number of bout victories, but bonus points proved to be the difference yet again as No. 14 Colorado Mesa stopped the Orediggers' upset bid with a 25-18 victory on Saturday at Brownson Arena.
Mines (3-11, 0-7 RMAC) got victories from Luis Gurule (125), John Crowley (157), Chance Davis (174), Paul Wilson (197) and Alec Bird (285) during the match, but only Wilson was able to generate bonus points with a first-period fall over Jordan Passehl.
Gurule gave Mines the opening lead of the dual with a 5-3 overtime victory over Johnathon Stelling in the 125-pound matchup. The victory closed Gurule's regular-season rookie campaign with a 25-16 record as the squad heads into next weekend's Super Region 4 Tournament.
Colorado Mesa (20-3, 6-2 RMAC) then rattled off three straight wins at weights 133, 141 and 149 to take an 18-3 lead before Crowley captured his team-best 26th victory with a 7-3 decision over Jon Gappmaier to stop the run and bring the score to 18-6.
The Mavericks pushed the lead to 22-6 with an 8-0 major decision at 165 pounds, but Mines countered once again, this time with a 5-3 Chance Davis decision at 174 pounds to cut the lead to 22-9.
CMU captured its final victory of the night at 184 pounds to bring the score to 25-9 and assure the Mavericks of the dual win before the Orediggers closed the match with Wilson's pin at 197 and Alec Bird's 4-2 sudden victory win at 285 to bring the score to final at 25-18.
Mines will next be in action at the RMAC/Super Region Four Championships on February 22-23 at Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb.
