Crowley Finishes Eighth At NCAA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – One day after securing the 49th All-American honor in the history of the Colorado School of Mines wrestling program, freshman John Crowley ended his debut at the 2013 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in eighth place on Saturday afternoon at the CrossPlex Complex in Birmingham, Ala. 

Crowley ends his season with a 31-12 record after falling on Saturday in both matchups. 

Mines finished 34th with six points and Nebraska-Kearney captured its second-straight National Championship with 108 points. St. Cloud State finished second with 105 team points, Notre Dame (Ohio) was third with 103. 5, Central Oklahoma finished fourth with 73 and Upper Iowa finished fifth with 49 to round out the top five. 

The 157-pounder opened the day with a matchup against third-ranked Jeremy Pelton of Notre Dame (Ohio), the eventual third-place finisher, and suffered a technical fall by a score of 19-3. 

From there, he headed to the seventh-place bout, where he fell to No. 7 Dillon Bera of Wisconsin-Parkside by a tech fall score of 17-0.

Despite struggles on Saturday, the Elizabeth native posted a 2-1 record on Friday to secure All-American status. He became the first Oredigger All-American since Peter Jenson and Derek Thompson both captured the honor in 2005.
