ARVADA – Playing its first home game away from the site of Harry D. Campbell Field in over 120 years, the Colorado School of Mines football team felt right at home at the North Area Athletic Complex on Saturday, as the Orediggers posted a 46-0 shutout of visiting William Jewell in the squad's 2014 home opener.

Head coach Bob Stitt recorded his 100th career victory in the win over the Cardinals (1-1) after becoming the all-time program wins leader in the 2012 season-opening 57-16 win over the same program for his 85th, pushing him past longtime Mines head coach and athletic director, Marv Kay. Saturday's win pushed Stitt's career record to 100-60 overall for a .625 win percentage.

Mines (2-0) held the Cardinals to just 253 total yards during the contest while also limiting the squad to an 8-of-22 third-down conversion rate and 0-for-5 on fourth downs. Mines was also very disciplined during the contest and was only flagged for penalties twice for a total of 10 yards.

Meanwhile, though not as crisp as it would like, the offense posted 508 yards on 91 offensive plays, including 148 yards on the ground with three touchdowns and 360 yards through the air with another pair of scores.

Mines registered four sacks and 12 tackles for loss for a total of 59 yards and also recovered a fumble and picked off a pass defensively.

The duo of Billy Sprague and Kole Kadavy led the defensive efforts with 10 and nine tackles, respectively, with Sprague notching a team-high 10 (two solo) and 0.5 tackle for loss and an interception. Kadavy posted nine tackles (five solo) and led the team with 2.5 tackles for loss for a total of 20 yards, with one of those being a sack for a loss of seven.

Redshirt freshman K.C. Quarry notched seven tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss and junior Dallas Fields added six with 1.5 tackles for loss. Juniors Jeff Grenfell, Shawn Kobylinski and Andrew Renfrew added five stops a piece, while Grenfell added a sack for a loss of 16 yards.

Tommy Hoskins, Chris Pinson, Ian McFadden, Emmanuel Graves and Jake Stuckey added four stops apiece as well, with Hoskins adding two tackles for loss and Pinson recording one.

Sophomore quarterback Justin Dvorak finished 36-of-52 for 331 yards and a pair of scores through the air. He was picked off once and sacked three times and also added 68 yards on 24 rushes and a touchdown. Dvorak now has accounted for seven combined touchdowns through two games to start the year, and improved to 5-0 as Mines' starting quarterback.

Senior Tevin Champagne added 52 yards on nine carries and a score and Ryan Call gained 17 rushing yards on three totes to lead the rushing attack. Redshirt freshman quarterback Steven Yoshihara added one carry for a one-yard touchdown as well.

Junior Jimmy Ellis caught 10 passes for 73 yards to lead the receiving corps, while sophomore Ty Young posted a game-best in receiving yards with 111 on seven catches. The Aurora product also added a 21-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Ellis added another 38 yards on four punt returns to match Young with 111 all-purpose yards.

Cole Spurgeon caught four balls for 34 yards and Eric Shannon notched 37 yards and a score on three catches.

Junior Avery Llewellyn, the RMAC Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year, converted all three of his field goal attempts and five extra points during the contest for 14 total points. The Durango product was true on attempts from 34, 28 and 43 yards and also averaged 42.7 yards on three punts, including a pair inside the Cardinal 20-yard line. He has notched 25 points through two games for the Orediggers to start the season.

It took a while for Mines to get the offense going, with the only offense in the first coming on a safety by Pinson and a pair of field goals by Llewellyn for an 8-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Mines notched its first score of the game when Dvorak found Shannon on a slant route for a 10-yard score to cap a four-play, 49-yard drive. Llewellyn's extra point gave Mines a 15-0 lead with 6:29 to play in the first half, and that score would hold until the break.

While the defense played tremendous throughout, the offense finally got clicking in the second half en route to 31 points. Champagne opened up the scoring after the break with a 3-yard run with 8:02 to go in the third quarter and a 21-yard touchdown from Dvorak to Young pushed that tally to 29-0 with 4:45 to go in the third.

Llewellyn added his 43-yarder to make it 32-0 with 14:04 to play in the contest and Dvorak added a 10-yard rushing score with 12:22 to play following Sprague's interception to make it 39-0. Yoshihara closed the scoring with a 1-yard run with 7:53 to play which brought the score to final at 46-0.

Mines will open up the RMAC portion of its schedule next weekend when the squad travels to face Chadron State (1-1) on Saturday, Sept. 20, in Chadron, Neb. The Eagles lost to Division I FCS Idaho State 39-34 on this afternoon in Pocatello, Idaho.
