ARVADA – The No. 17 Colorado School of Mines football team remained unbeaten during the 2014 season with a 48-21 victory over visiting Black Hills State on Saturday during Homecoming at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.
Mines (4-0, 2-0 RMAC) churned out 675 yards on 82 plays, at an average of 8.2 yards per play, led by sophomore quarterback Justin Dvorak, who finished 36-of-46 for 539 yards and four touchdowns through the air.
The Tomball, Texas product was held to -16 yards rushing during the game on 11 carries, but set a new career high for passing yardage in the contest.
Senior tailback Tevin Champagne carried 21 times for a career-high 138 rushing yards at an average of 6.6 yards per rush to lead Mines' 146-yard rushing attack. He also caught a pair of passes for six yards and scored his touchdown on a 3-yard scamper in the third quarter.
Junior Devin Reaves carried five times for 19 yards and a score as well, with his touchdown coming on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter to put Mines up 41-21.
Junior Cole Spurgeon led the receiving corps with eight catches on the way to 92 receiving yards, while junior Jimmy Ellis added seven receptions for 87 yards.
Diamond Gillis caught four passes for a game-high 158 yards and a touchdown, including a 90-yard score in the second quarter to put the Orediggers up 10-0. The Aurora product added 85 kick return yards on four returns for a total of 243 all-purpose yards in the game.
Sophomore Ty Young added five receptions for 37 yards and a pair of scores as well, giving him three touchdowns through four games to start the season.
Junior Billy Sprague led the defense with 12 tackles (five solo) and a pass breakup, while senior Kole Kadavy posted 11 stops (10 solo) and 2.0 tackles for loss.
Jeff Grenfell also notched 10 stops (seven solo) and 1.5 tackles for loss, including a sack for a loss of two yards. Chris Pinson was credited with eight stops (three solo) as well, while Shawn Kobylinski, Drew Stephon and Ian McFadden chipped in five stops apiece to lead the secondary.
Reigning RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week Avery Llewellyn was 2-for-2 on field goals and was 6-for-6 on extra point attempts for 12 total points in the contest. He also punted four times for 169 yards for a 42.2 yards per kick average and recorded four touchbacks on eight kickoffs with a 63.5 yards per kick average.
Mines will head to Las Vegas, N.M., next Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup against New Mexico Highlands (2-2, 1-1 RMAC). The Cowboys defeated Fort Lewis 45-10 on Saturday in Durango.
