DURANGO, Colo. - A fourth-quarter comeback helped Colorado School of Mines beat Fort Lewis on the road, 45-35.
The Orediggers (3-2, 3-2 RMAC) were led by another big game from
Justin Dvorak, who completed 28-of-44 passes for 432 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for a score. The bulk of that passing went to
Brody Oliver, who had a career game with 205 yards receiving and three touchdowns, while on the ground,
Sam Seeton ran for 106 yards and a score to key Mines in the second half.
Fort Lewis had erased a 31-14 Mines halftime lead with a 21-point third quarter, but the Orediggers responded with two touchdowns and two critical takeaways in the fourth quarter to win the game.
Caleb Courkamp recovered a fumble and
Drew Stephon iced it with a late interception to stop a pair of late FLC drives.
Mines set the tone early with a three-and-out on Fort Lewis' opening possession, and Dvorak engineered a clinical first offensive series going 5-for-5 on the way to a 23-yard
Brody Oliver touchdown. Mines sputtered in the red zone on their second series but
Scott Marshall nailed a 25-yard field goal to make it 10-0.
Fort Lewis answered with Jordan Gillen's wide-open 47-yard scoring haul to end the first quarter, but a missed PAT made it a 10-6 game. Mines showed its quick-strike capability on the next possession as Dvorak threw his 100th career touchdown on a 64-yard bomb to Oliver to end a 75-yard, 1:15 drive. The Skyhawks responded with Gillen's second touchdown catch before Oliver caught his third on a 12-yard slant from Dvorak halfway through the quarter, and
Ty Young's eight-yard catch ended the half with Mines up 31-14.
The Skyhawks broke the game open in the third quarter with three unanswered touchdowns. FLC opened the second half with a long drive that ended when Arealous Hughes wound up with a nearly-intercepted pass for a 25-yard touchdown, and Bo Coleman converted on 4th-and-8 on the Mines 18 with his third touchdown pass to Gillen, cutting the Mines lead to 31-27 near the end of the third. After a Mines three-and-out, Drake Griffin burst through a hole on first down and rumbled 68 yards to the house, giving Fort Lewis its first lead at 35-31.
Dvorak snapped the FLC run with a 19-yard setup to
Zach Richter before taking it in himself from two yards out, giving the Orediggers the lead back. A big defensive stop - keyed by
Dallas Fields and
Dean Wenger's tackle for loss of PJ Hall - gave Mines the ball back, and a long drive ended with
Sam Seeton punching in from a yard out to extend the lead back to 45-35.
The Mines defense produced two key turnovers in the fourth quarter to preserve the lead. With Fort Lewis driving into Mines territory,
Caleb Courkamp picked up Hall's fumble midway through the period, and
Drew Stephon jumped a long pass by Coleman with 3:07 remaining to halt another drive in Mines territory.
