Amann's Late Goal Gives Mines Courageous Draw

How It Happened
Playing a man down the entire second half and overtime, Colorado School of Mines salvaged a courageous 2-2 draw against Fort Lewis on a late Trevor Amann equalizer on Sunday, October 16 at Stermole Soccer Stadium.

Mines (7-4-3, 6-2-2) showed tremendous perseverance to earn the hard-fought draw with FLC (7-6-1, 6-3-1) which enabled to them to remain one point (20-19) ahead of the Skyhawks in the RMAC standings.

Down 2-1 with their backs against the wall, Trevor Amann and John Haist took matters into their own hands. On a counter-attack, Haist worked down the center of the pitch and sucked the FLC defenders towards him. It allowed him to work a simple give-and-go to Amann who promptly buried a left-footed equalizer past the Fort Lewis keeper in the 82'.

The reason the Orediggers needed the heroics of Amann and Haist was because they suffered a red card moments before the halftime break which left them a man down the rest of the way. That unlucky break lead to another in the 74' as Fort Lewis earned a penalty kick. Tamino Kroeger beat Mines keeper Leo Chely to his left to put his team up 2-1.

Before those two big momentum swings, Mines and Fort Lewis had played each other fairly even with both team's scoring one goal on five, first-half shots. The Orediggers struck first in the 11' when Jackson Shelledy headed in his first goal of the season. Shelledy got the headed-goal after a Mines set piece was ricocheted around.

Fort Lewis equalized the game only six minutes later when Salifu Jatta hit Robbie Young on a breakaway.

Notables
-    Despite playing a man down for the last 65 minutes, Mines was only outshot 20-14.
-    Big credit to holding Fort Lewis to the draw goes to starting goalkeeper Leo Chely who had six saves on the afternoon. Jackson Shelledy and Bryce Townsend also made huge saves down the stretch.
-    Shelledy was also huge on offense as he scored his first goal of the season and put two of Mines' four shots on goal.

Up Next
Mines returns to the road next week as they will play Adams State and Fort Lewis once again.
