Grotz' Penalty Kick Gives Mines Road Victory at ASU

How It Happened
An early goal by penalty kick was all that was needed as Colorado School of Mines earned a 1-0 victory at Adams State on Friday, October 21 at the ASU Soccer Field.

Mines (8-4-3, 7-2-2) was the dominant team throughout as they outshot ASU (5-10, 2-9) 21-8, but were only able to push across one goal in the key road victory.

In the 8', Adams State committed a foul in the box which drew the decision for a penalty kick opportunity. Junior midfielder Nikolaus Grotz was chosen to take the opportunity, and he calmly buried the attempt to give the Orediggers a 1-0 they would never relinquish.

While they continued to put pressure on the Grizzlies throughout, Mines was only able to put six of their 21 shots on goal and ASU goalkeeper Austin Baumeister kept out five of the attempts.

Notables
-    The goal by Nikolaus Grotz was his second of the season. Grotz also had two of the Orediggers' six shots on goals.
-    Jason Zobott, John Haist, Ashi Geberkidane and Ben Overholt had the other shots on target.
-    Mines also had a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks

Up Next
Mines will once again tangle with Fort Lewis as they head to Durango this Sunday for a 2:30 p.m. start. If the Orediggers were to get the victory over the Skyhawks they would clinch their spot in the RMAC Tournament.
