ST. GEORGE, Utah - Colorado School of Mines' offense was unstoppable as they cruised to a 62-27 win at Dixie State University to keep pace at the top of the RMAC standings.
The Orediggers (6-2, 5-2 RMAC) will stay in a three- or four-way tie for first in the league depending on Colorado Mesa's result against Adams State on Saturday night. Mines racked up 582 yards of total offense, including 268 on the ground as the rushing attack had its second straight 250+ yard game.
Justin Dvorak threw for 281 yards and four touchdowns, running for another, and Brody Oliver caught two on 166 yards receiving. On the ground, Sam Seeton ran for 104 yards and a score, Zac Guy had two touchdowns with 76 yards rushing.
The Mines defense generated three interceptions and held Dixie State (4-4) to 320 yards of offense, including 107 yards in the air.Â
Mines got started with a bang as Sam Seeton's 25-yard touchdown run capped a methodical 85-yard opening drive. Dixie State responded with a grinding 15-play drive capped by Ernest Quiocho's two-yard dive, but their two-point conversion try failed and Mines answered with Oliver's six-yard touchdown catch on the next series to make it 14-6.
Dixie State got it within a point to start the second quarter with Josh Thompson's 20-yard option run, but the Orediggers responded only 31 seconds later with Dvorak's 74-yard bomb to Oliver. A third-down sack by Matthew King and Tommy Hoskins forced the first punt of the game on the next series, and that led to Ty Young's 16-yard scoring catch mid-quarter to extend the lead to 28-13.
Neither offense slowed down in the third quarter. After a three-and-out to start by Dixie, Dvorak's 11-yard pass to Zach Richter were the first points of the half, but the Trailblazers got one back with Orlando Wallace's 49-yard run out of the wildcat. Zac Guy burst through a hole for an 18-yard score later in the quarter to lead 42-20, but Dixie State answered two plays later with a 67-yard Orlando Wallace pass to Cooper Robinson. Guy ended the third quarter with his second score on a one-yard dive.
Drake Thenell's tip drill interception nearly delivered a pick-six to end the third quarter, putting Mines on the DSU 6 yard line. Three plays later, Dvorak strolled in on the option to make it 55-27. Running back Josh Odom tacked on his first career score late in the fourth, from 22 yards out, to set a 62-27 final score.
