Mines vs. Regis, Saturday, 5 p.m. [Live Stats] [Video]
Mines looks to keep the good home court vibes going as they welcome in Chadron State and Regis to begin RMAC play.
IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME
Colorado School of Mines finally played its first home games of the 2016-17 season, and Lockridge Arena was very good to them. First, the Orediggers pulled off one the biggest wins in program history as they knocked of then nationally fourth-ranked Florida Southern, 81-66. They followed that up with a 79-51 blowout of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) for a 2-0 weekend in Golden.Â
STAR OF THE WEEKEND
While it was great weekend overall for all of the Orediggers, senior point guard
Laura Tyree really had a truly great weekend in the wins over FSC and ERAU. The Lakewood native averaged 15 points, six rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in the victories. Tyree was really special in the victory over the Mocs where she dropped 16 points, grabbed five rebounds and had two steals. She was instrumental in the key run of the game where she scored back-to-back baskets in a decisive 16-2 run at the end of the first quarter.
SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE
Just as they did last season, Mines is dominating the backboards again this season. The Orediggers are out-rebounding their opponents by almost 10 a game (45.4-to-36). They have also pulled down 136 offensive rebounds so far for an average of 15.1 per outing which is leading to an average of 12.3 second chance points a game.
THREE-POINT THREATÂ
Sophomore shooting guard
Cassidy Budge has been the Orediggers' top long ball threat this season. The Colorado Springs native has buried a team-best 22 triples this season while shooting .373 from deep. She has hit three, three-pointers or more in five of the team's nine games.
TOMON'S TIME
The graduation of
Courtney Martin left a major hole down low for the Orediggers that was going to be tough to overcome. Insert:
Elizabeth Tomon. The junior from North Ogden, Utah has been a major revelation so far. Tomon is averaging team-bests in points (11.8) and rebounds (6.9) while shooting .494 from the field. When Tomon is on the floor, Mines is outscoring opponents a team-best 5.12ppg.
SCOUTING CHADRON
The Eagles enter the weekend at 0-3 overall with losses to Montana State-Billings (66-60), Nebraska-Kearney (72-52) and Division I opponent Wyoming (74-50). Erin Graham is the team's top scoring option at 11.7ppg. Kylah Collins gives the team a low-post punch off the bench with 10.3ppg and 7.3rpg.
SCOUTING REGIS
The Rangers enter the weekend undefeated at 5-0 with victories over Newman (58-54), UNK (65-58 and Florida Southern (64-49). Currently ranked third in the South Central Region, Regis is the top defensive team in the RMAC as they are holding opponents to 52ppg. Mary Sigler leads the team in scoring at 12.4 per game. Kaylie Rader is the team's top low post option with 10.4ppg, 7.4rpg and shooting at a gaudy .649 from the field.
