SAN ANGELO, Texas – A furious rally comes up just short as #20 Colorado School of Mines' season comes to a close as they fall to host and nationally 12th-ranked Angelo State 3-1 (22-25, 18-25, 25-18, 24-26) in the second round of the NCAA D-II South Central Region Volleyball Tournament at ASU's Junell Center.
Trailing two sets to none, Mines (25-7) refused to be put away as they came all the way back to get within two points of forcing a fifth and final set, but ASU (33-3) was able to hold off the Orediggers to advance to the region championship.
After dropping the first two sets, the Orediggers got out to an early lead in the third set on the Rambelles. Narrowly ahead 15-14, Mines proceeded to go on a quick 5-0 run on two kills from
Madeline Behr and a kill from
Ashlyn Eitemiller to pull away for good. In fact, the Orediggers went on a 10-4 run in total to end the game with Behr supplying three of the points.
The Orediggers victory in game three seemed to inspire Angelo State though as they quickly jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the fourth set. Mines kept narrowing the lead back to three, but each time the Rambelles would pull away again.
Trailing 19-15, Mines got an ASU error followed by kills from
Johanna Boyer (2) and
LaRose Currie and an ace from
Taryn Huber to pull off a dramatic rally and take their first lead of the set.
Both teams then traded points all the way to a 24-24 tie, but Angelo State was able to escape after Brianna Sotello kill followed by a Mines attacking error.
