How It Happened
In a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament Second Round matchup, it was #23 Colorado School of Mines (1-0) who this time pulled out the victory as they blasted #7 Dallas Baptist (0-1) 5-0 in the season opener at Stermole Soccer Stadium.
After Dallas Baptist put the first shot on target of the game moments into the match, it was all Mines the rest of the way as they took over the possession fairly decisively.
The Orediggers finally broke through in the 20' when
Cari Smith decided to go it alone and she took a right-footed shot from past the 18-yard box and blasted it in the goal. Less than three minutes later Smith got the in action again as she took a short corner from the right side of the box. She crossed back across the box to the far post where
Emily Townsend headed in the second goal.
Mines wasn't down scoring in the first half though as
Giselle Sawaged took a left-footed shot from deep past the box, and deposited it in the back of net for a 3-0 halftime advantage. Sawaged's boot came at the 29' mark.
After the halftime break, the Orediggers picked right back up where they left off as
Nicole LaTourette put in the fourth goal of the game. Her goal in the 54' came off another short corner where Townsend headed down to the feet of LaTourette who booted a shot that ricocheted off the cross bar and in.
The scoring died down for over 20 minutes before
Jennifer Kendall was sprung for a breakaway, open-net goal in the 77' to put the game on ice.
