SAN DIEGO - Kortney Descamp's 86th-minute winner gave #6 Colorado School of Mines a hard-fought 1-0 win at #7 UC-San Diego, providing head coach
Kevin Fickes with his 100th career win.
The Orediggers (4-0-0) remained perfect against a dangerous Tritons (3-1-0) squad that outshot Mines 15-4. While Mines' defense did enought to earn the draw, it was Descamp's moment of quality that secured the win as she roped a right-footed shot into the upper left corner from 30 yards out with 4:31 remaining in regulation.
The goal came after Mines withstood constant Triton pressure, with
Sam Zumbro making four saves and
Cari Smith clearing a shot off the line late in the first half to preserve the clean sheet.
Nicole Latourette had the best scoring chance of the first half when she sent a long-range shot just over the bar in the 40th minute, and
Acacia Ortiz had an early second-half bid also sail high. Descamp's goal - the first of her career - was the only other real threat Mines had after they took possession off a UCSD foul in the 86th minute. The defense then blocked away two late shots by the Tritons.
