GOLDEN, Colo. - #3 Colorado School of Mines turned in an impressive offensive performance to rout UC-Colorado Springs 5-0 in non-league play.
The Orediggers (7-0-0) matched their best start ever with the win, equaling their 2011 beginning. Mines took 40 shots, their most in a game since 2005, as they played a high tempo all night.
Emily Townsend scored twice and
Julia Hawn,
Haley Cole, and
Nicole LaTourette added strikes as Mines put 18 shots on goal. Townsend opened the scoring in the 11th minute, heading back her own rebound off a corner, and LaTourette finished a breakaway from
Acacia Ortiz at 21' to make it 2-0. Hawn finished out the first half with a far-post finish off a terrific pass by Ortiz at 35'.
Two more goals came after the break as Cole slotted a far-post shot to finish a superb long cross-field pass by
Brooke Stoermer, and Townsend netted her second of the game on a turnaround shot at 76' when
Emily Garnier's corner fell into the box.
NOTABLES
- Mines' 40 shots were the second-most in program history and most against an NCAA Division II opponent. The program record is 44 vs. Johnson & Wales in 2005. Mines' 18 shots on goal are the most since 2012 against Northern State (25).
- Mines led 40-5 on shots, 7-1 on corners, and 18-0 in shots on goal.
- Townsend now leads the team with four goals this season. Garnier extended her assists lead to four.
- LaTourette scored her second goal of the season while Hawn and Cole each hit their first of 2016.
- Ortiz's two assists were her first points of the season; the sophomore playmaker was active in the midfield and took five shots.

Sam Zumbro (73:55) and
Shannon Mooney (16:05) combined for the shutout, Mines' sixth of the year. Neither had to make a save as the Mines defense held UCCS without a shot on goal.
- Mines has not allowed a goal in 390:29 consecutive minutes, and has not even allowed a shot on goal over the last 152:25.
- Grace Ramsden allowed three goals with nine saves in the first half for UCCS; Dorothy Bertoncin played the second half with three saves and two allowed. Sammie Brown added a defensive stop for the Mountain Lions.
- The game was not an RMAC contest; the two will play their league game Oct. 14 at UCCS.
