Wrestling Goes 1-2 at Midwest Duals

KEARNEY, Neb. - Colorado School of Mines wrestling went 1-2 at the Midwest Duals, falling to Central Missouri and San Francisco State before bouncing back to beat University of Mary.

What was supposed to be a four-match day for Mines turned into only three after weather-related travel issues caused Newman and Drury to drop out of the meet; Mines added San Francisco State to their schedule at the last minute. 

Robert Gambrell highlighted the day as the only Oredigger to go 3-0, pushing his record to 17-2 this season.
 

Central Missouri 25, Mines 19 [Results]
Central Missouri overcame a Mines lead over the final three matches to win the day's opener, 25-19. Mines opened with Matt Lavengood winning by forfeit and Noah Au-Yeung majoring Daide Agnew 18-7, but CMU fought back with Brad Irwin's sudden-victory decision over Lukas Erickson at 141 and Zach Schridde's upset pin of #9 Jacob Gerken at 149. Ethan Ruby won 11-8 at 157 before Jesse Reser pinned Keenan Willits at 165, but Robert Gambrell got Mines back on track with a 2:52 fall over Dylan Lewis at 174 to take the lead.

Central Missouri reeled off three straight wins to end the match with Allan Person winning 10-4 over Ben Krantz, Grant Sparks 5-0 against Brandon saunders, and Chase Miller 16-3 versus Jake Feldman.
 

San Francisco State 22, Mines 15 [Results]
Mines battled to the end, but San Francisco State came away with a 22-15 dual win in their meet.

SFSU got off to a 9-0 lead with Matt Gamble's fall over Lavengood at 125 and Nate Cervantez's 7-1 decision against Au-Yeung at 133, but Justin Ray took down Josh Villaflor, 7-1, and Gerken pinned Dylan Furtado to level the meet. SFSU again won the next two with Trevor Perez's 12-6 decision over Ruby and Tyson Kuahine's wild 21-11 win against Willits. 

Mines fought back with decisions by Gambrell (10-3 over Morris Wilner) and Krantz (7-4 against Mitchell Owens), but SFSU won the last two bouts to seal the team victory as Johnny Costa beat Saunders 10-5 and Ricardo Jaramillo won 6-3 against Feldman.
 

Mines 24, University of Mary 12 [Results]
Mines bounced back with a 24-12 victory in the day's final dual with the University of Mary.

Mines overcame a slow start to win eight straight matches and take the dual. Down 6-0 after 133, Ray pinned Reed Cronin just before the buzzer, and Gerken gave mines the lead with an 8-4 decision over Hunter Eckert. Ethan Ruby won 9-2 at 157 against Christ Leatherman, and Keenan Willits was a 6-3 victor over Paul Michaelson. Robert Gambrell decisioned Dane Fischer 7-3 at 174 before Ben Krantz sealed the team victory with his 6-2 win against Jonathan Pelach.

Anthony Spallino punctuated the win with his first career dual victory at 197, going over Jacob Green 6-4, and with the match in hand, Mines forfeited at heavyweight.
