GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines battled, but Colorado Mesa came out on top 28-9 in a dual meet Thursday night.

The night saw three bouts go to overtime with the Orediggers winning two as Matt Lavengood and Robert Gambrell picked up wins to go with Justin Ray's hard-fought decision.

The match of the night was right off the bat at 125 pounds as Lavengood erased a 14-3 second-period deficit to win 16-14 in overtime against Thomas Tawata. Lavengood got a key late-period takedown in the second and a stall point to cut the deficit to 14-7, then tilted Tawata for four to begin the third, picked up two more stalling points, and earned riding time to tie it at 14-14. In overtime, Lavengood only need a few seconds to secure the takedown to win.

The 133-pound match went to overtime as well as a third-period escape by Noah Au-Yeung tied his bout with Juaquin Olivas, 4-4; Olivas earned the takedown in OT, however, to win. Ray then put Mines back ahead with a gutsy 3-2 decision over Brett Kasprzyk, riding out the third period to neutralize riding time and hang on to his 3-2 lead from the first period.

Lukas Erickson, wrestling up a weight at 149, fell to Nick Swanson 11-4 as Mesa tied the meet, and the Mavericks then went ahead when #9 Payton Tawater pinned Ethan Ruby in the first period. #12 Jason Buhr earned a 16-8 major over Keenan Willits at 165 to set the Mavs' lead at 16-6.

At 174 pounds, Robert Gambrell came back to earn an 8-6 overtime decision against Bruno Nicoletti. Nicoletti led 5-3 after a period, but Gambrell cut it to 5-4 with a second-period escape, then went ahead on a third-period takedown before riding time for Nicoletti knotted it at 6-6. Gambrell took an overtime shot at the edge of the mat and scored it to win.

That would prove to be Mines' final points as Austin Gaun earned a technical fall over Ben Krantz at 184, and Jareb Aziz beat Brandon Saunders 10-2 in a major decision at 197. Clayon Voytilla won 5-1 over Jake Feldman at 285 in a match that stayed 1-1 until the closing seconds of the third period.
