GOLDEN, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines picked up a huge 28-20 victory over visiting and nationally 23rd-ranked Simon Fraser University on Thursday, January 5 in Volk Gymnasium.

Mines (2-1) jumped out to a commanding 28-3 lead in the blink of an eye as they cruised past the acclaimed Clan (0-4).

The Orediggers opened the match with a bang as Matthew Lavengood scored a 12-2 major decision over Oscar Bulagui at 125 pounds. After SFU decision at 133, Mines ripped off five consecutive victories in a row – two by forfeit – to put the dual away.

The highlights of that run came in the 165 and 174-pound bouts. First, Keenan Willits pinned Simon Fraser's Graham Fader a mere 59 seconds into the bout. Then, Robert Gambrell scored a hard-fought 4-2 victory over #12 Reid Watkins. Gambrell earned that impressive win due in large part to a three-point (escape & takedown) second period.

Lukas Erickson and Jacob Gerken gave Mines a combined 12 points in the 141 and 149-pound matches due to forfeit.

Simon Fraser closed the match out with fall and a tech. fall in the 184 and 197-pound matches and got a forfeit at heavyweight, but it was too little, too late.

Mines returns to action this Saturday, January 7 as they head to the Hastings Open in Hastings, Neb.
