RAPID CITY, S.D. - South Dakota Mines scored 20 second-half points to overcome a Colorado School of Mines lead and win, 37-29, on Saturday.
The Orediggers (3-4, 3-3 RMAC) had 485 yards of offense and scored a fourth-quarter touchdown in a comeback attempt, but the Hardrockers (4-3, 3-3 RMAC) sealed the game with EJ DeVeaux's interception of the potential game-tying touchdown with just over a minute to go.
Riley Hoff caught 14 passes for 195 yards, both career highs, and added two touchdowns as
Ben Bottlinger threw for 382 yards and two scores.
Zac Guy ran for 89 yards as he and
Garrett Hyles had rushing touchdowns.
Jake Sullivan led SDSMT with 334 yards and two touchdowns passing, while also running for 120 yards and a score.
Mines went ahead in the first half as Hoff hauled in a 15-yard touchdown and
Grayson Harris hit a 47-yard field goal to lead 10-0 at the end of the first, but SDSMT got on the board with Ian Anderson's touchdown catch to open the second. The Orediggers answered with Hyles' first career touchdown, a four-yard stroll, to cap a 93-yard drive before Sullivan answered back on the next drive. The Orediggers went 80 yards in 1:09 to score before the half on Guy's one-yard plunge, but SDSMT's Enis Sefa hit the first of his three field goals, a 36-yarder, as time expired to cut the lead to 23-17.
Sefa would make two more third-quarter field goals to tie it at 23, and Dorian Cowart's one-yard run put the Hardrockers ahead with 8:46 remaining in the game. The Orediggers got a quick score as Hoff hauled in a 22-yard catch from Bottlinger, but the PAT was blocked to keep SDSMT in the lead; they cemented the win with Jermaine Williams' 29-yard catch with 4:49 remaining, and with Mines needing a touchdown and a two-point conversion to force overtime, DeVeaux made a pick at the pylon to seal it.
Mines returns home next Saturday to host Dixie State for a noon start.
