GOLDEN, Colo. -
Grayson Harris' go-ahead field goal and a crucial fourth-quarter goal-line fumble recovery helped Colorado School of Mines beat Dixie State, 19-17, in a back-and-forth battle on Saturday.
The Orediggers (4-3) turned in 430 yards of offense led by
Cameron Mayberry's 217 yards rushing, but Dixie State (3-5) pounced on Mines penalties to overcome an early 10-3 deficit and take a fourth-quarter lead.
Harris hit field goals of 38 and 32 yards, with Mayberry scoring on the ground and
Brody Oliver through the air for Mines.
Brockton Sterling executed a strip of Blake Barney just short of the goal line in the fourth that was pounced on by R.J. Phillips to prevent a touchdown that would have made it a two-score game.
Both teams made quarterback switches, with
Cody Limmer (8-14, 75 yds) replacing
Ben Bottlinger (9-15, 93 yds, 1 TD) for Mines, and Blake Barney (8-9, 128 yds, 1 TD, 35 yds rush) providing a second-half spark for Dixie State in place of Malik Watson (9-18, 87 yds).
Oliver's 12-yard reception from Bottlinger put Mines ahead 7-0 in the first quarter, and after a touchdown was called back on a penalty, Dixie State settled for A.J. Yergensen's 36-yard field goal early in the second, and that left the score 7-3 at halftime.Â
Mines started the second half with Harris' 38-yarder to lead 10-3, but Dixie State tied it on Landon Cook's dive over the pile late in the quarter before Mayberry's 31-yard breakout made it 16-10 after a missed PAT.
DSU opened the fourth quarter with Brad Duran's 38-yard catch from Barney to take their first lead of the game, 17-16, but Mines took back the lead with Harris' second field goal with 11:19 remaining. DSU continued to threaten, driving to the red zone later in the quarter, but as Barney made a dive for the end zone he was hit by Sterling at the one, popping the ball free for Phillips to return to the 10.
Mines then held the ball for the final 6:11 of the game, going only 32 yards but smartly managing the clock to deny Dixie State a final chance.
The Orediggers visit Chadron State on Oct. 28 for a noon start.
