GOLDEN, Colo. -
Nicole LaTourette's goal 7:50 into overtime was golden for #6 Colorado School of Mines as it beat Western State 1-0 on Sunday.
The Orediggers (10-2-1, 7-1-1 RMAC) were frustrated with 31 shots and no goals to show for it in regulation, but finally managed to score on a corner kick in the first overtime to shake off the Mountaineers (4-6-2, 3-4-1 RMAC).
LaTourette headed
Emily Garnier's corner kick - Mines' 13th of the game - into the side of the net to end it. It was the fourth in a string of corners in overtime, and Mines had also produced a good scoring chance by
Taylor McRae and a blocked attempt by Garnier early in the extra frame.
LaTourette also had the first chance of the game as she forced a save off the post in the first minute, setting off a period of early pressure that saw Mines take 12 shots with three corners before WSCU had their first look at goal. The goal never came for the Orediggers in regulation, however, as Western State goalkeeper Katie Simpson-Johnson made seven saves in the first half, and Emilie Eckhart had six more stops in the balance.
Shannon Mooney made two saves to record the shutout.
Chaney Brugman was Mines' most active player offensively with seven shots as Garnier and
Jennifer Kendall each had four.
