GLENDORA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific held off Colorado School of Mines in a 35-21 non-conference decision Saturday night.
The Cougars (4-2) never trailed as they got out to a 14-0 lead and then pulled away in the second half. The Orediggers (3-3) were held to 128 yards on the ground despite three rushing touchdowns by
Cameron Mayberry.
Mines quarterback
Ben Bottlinger was 20-for-27 for 214 yards, with Mayberry rushing for 87 yards.
Brody Oliver caught seven targets for 94 yards, with
Riley Hoff snaring nine for 83 yards. APU's Kurt Scoby had 191 yards rushing with two scores as quarterback Andrew Elffers was 20-for-30 for 280 yards and three touchdowns.Â
APU ran out to a 14-0 lead with a couple of short fields, with Scoby capping a 45-yard drive to start and then a Mines fumble in their own territory leading to Elffers' 22-yard pass to Weston Carr late in the first quarter.
Mines cut the lead in half with Mayberry's first from three yards out, but another quick strike by the Cougars from Elffers to Carr put it at 21-7 just 1:18 later.
Dean Wenger's interception on the next drive was returned to the one-yard line, and that set up an easy score for Mayberry; neither team could score on their final possessions of the first half, making it 21-14 at the break.
Azusa Pacific had the ball first in the second half and produced a 13-yard Elffers pass to Jordan Bogardus, but the Orediggers answered with an 81-yard, 6:54 drive capped by Mayberry's seven-yard score to cut the lead to 28-21. That would be Mines' final points as Scoby scored from 11 yards out on the next drive, and a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions sealed the win for APU.
Wenger led the Mines defense with a superb effort, making a career-high 15 tackles, two for a loss including a half sack, and the interception.
RJ Phillips,
Brockton Sterling,
Scott Adams, and
Nicola Lonardo were also in on sacks.
Azusa Pacific outgained Mines 482 yards to 342. The Cougars held a large lead in time of possession at 34:42.
The Orediggers will head to South Dakota Mines next Saturday.
