#17 Mines Survives In Five To Move On To RMAC Semis

GOLDEN, Colo. - #17 Colorado School of Mines was taken to the brink by Adams State, but rallied back from two sets down to win 3-2 (25-27, 18-25, 25-22, 25-13, 15-9) in the RMAC Volleyball Tournament quarterfinals.

After the Grizzlies (14-14) hit .358 over the first two sets to put the Orediggers (24-4) on their heels, Mines held ASU to just .047 over the final three sets - including negative in the last two - to rally back and win. The Orediggers move on to face MSU Denver on Friday at Regis, with the time to be announced Wednesday.

Madeline Behr and Lindsey Jin had huge offensive matches for Mines, as Behr swung for 19 kills (.342) and Jin 17 (.389). Marina Hansen notched her second double-double in a week with 55 assists and 13 digs, while LaRose Currie had a match-high 22 digs from the libero spot. Serving ended up being key in Mines' comeback as they had 10 in all, with four each by Jin and Hansen.

Mines fell behind early in the first set but hung in and took their first lead at 18-17 on Hansen's first ace of the match. A 3-0 run later made it 23-20 and seemed to give the home side control, but ASU answered right back to tie it at 23-23 before Mines forced set point twice, first on a Behr kill and then on an ASU error. The Grizzlies, however, ended on a 3-0 run to win 27-25.

ASU was red-hot in the second, hitting .395 and holding Mines to an uncharacteristic 10 kills (.152) in the set. The third began the same way before Mines caught fire in the middle of the set with an 8-1 run to turn a tie set into a 22-16 lead on a long Hailey Babcock serving run. That led to a seismic shift in the momentum of the match on the way to a 25-22 set victory, and Mines then dominated the fourth, holding the Grizzlies to -.053 hitting to cruise 25-13 and force a fifth.

A 5-1 spurt in the fifth, keyed by kills from behr and Lindsey Jin and Janice Jin's ace, gave Mines the 8-5 lead at the turn, and Abby Tiesman wrapped kills around Hansen's fourth and final ace to lead 11-6 after an ASU timeout. The Grizzlies stayed in it with a 3-0 run to cut the lead to 11-9, but Mines left no doubt with their finish, ending on back-to-back aces by Lindsey Jin to close it out at 15-9.
