WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Second-half goals by #1 Midwestern State sent them to the NCAA Elite Eight, ending #8 Colorado School of Mines' season in the South Central regional final.
In a back-and-forth battle, the unbeaten Mustangs (20-0-2) used Patrick Fitzgerald's 67th-minute penalty kick and an insurance goal by Ross Fitzpatrick in the closing seconds to advance to Saturday's super-regional game against Cal Poly Pomona, who upset #2 Cal Baptist in the West final..
MSU outshot Mines 13-9, but both sides had outstanding scoring chances from open play. The Orediggers ended their season at 17-4-1, making their second Sweet 16 appearance in the last three years.
Taylor Lampe had six saves in the shutout for the Mustangs, with
Collin Hall stopping four for Mines. The game was scoreless after a tense first half, and Mines pressed coming out of the break, but an Oredigger foul in the box in the 67th minute handed MSU a penalty-kick opportunity. Fitzgerald went one way and Hall went the other, and the Mustangs had a 1-0 lead.
Mines continued to attack and nearly leveled with their best scoring chance in the 89th minute, but
Ryan Wilson's header was stopped at the upper corner by Lampe's outstretch fingertips. The Mustangs got an insurance goal with three seconds left in what was essentially an empty-net goal by Fitzpatrick with Hall out of the box.
