GOLDEN, Colo. - The play of freshmen
Mason Baker and
Michael Glen led #9 Colorado School of Mines to a victory over Nebraska-Kearney, 86-79.
The Orediggers improved to 4-0 behind the two youngsters, who each drained 18 points. Baker was nearly perfect off the bench, making his first five shots in a 5-for-7 night and also going 6-for-6 at the foul line, while Glen notched his first career double-double tacking on 10 rebounds and two blocks to his 7-of-10 shooting night.
Ben Sonnefeld added 12 points and
Duke Douglas stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, three assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Adam Laine was a first-half spark off the bench with 14 points in only nine minutes.
UNK was led by Lane Rohrich's 28 points, and Trey Lansman hit 18.
After a back-and-forth opening, Mines took control midway through the first half on a 7-0 run capped by a Baker three-pointer, and the lead ballooned to as much as 17 with a 10-0 run wrapped around halftime to make it 58-41 with 18:44 to go. UNK scored 18 of the next 27 points, however, to get the deficit back to single digits, and they pulled as close as four as they held Mines without a field goal in a 7:30 span midway through the half.
The Orediggers reponded in a big way, with Glen's three-point play with 3:48 to go, and his three-pointer with 1:35 left, sparking a 10-4 run to seal the game. Kearney threatened to make it interesting with Rohrich's and-one with 22 seconds to go, but Sonnefeld sprung Douglas on a thunderous dunk at the other end to ice the game in the closing seconds.
Mines shot 52.6 percent for the game, including 21-of-24 at the line. Bench production was a huge factor as Mines scored 32 from its reserves to only six for UNK.
The Orediggers stay home to host Concordia (Neb.) on Friday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m.
