GOLDEN, Colo. - Jasmine Harris' buzzer-beater layup gave Sioux Falls a 54-52 win over Colorado School of Mines after a spirited comeback by the Orediggers put them back in the game on the final day of the Tony Corbetta Classic.
The Orediggers (2-2) were led by
Nicole Archambeau's second straight double-double as the junior poured in 17 points and grabbed 17 boards, 14 of them defensive, while adding four assists, two blocks, and a steal.
Emily Bailey hit 14 points to go with seven boards, and
Paige Husa scored eight.
USF had balanced scoring with Kaely Hummel scoring 11, with Harris, Andi Mataloni, and Augusta Thramer scoring nine each. Moira Duffy had an impressive defensive game with 10 rebounds and seven blocks.
Neither team led by more than four in the first half, with the Cougars (2-2) up 23-19 at the break, their largest lead of the game. That extended to eight after back-to-back threes from Hummel and Mataloni early in the third made it 31-23, but Mines chipped away and cut the lead down to four by the early part of the fourth quarter. A 9-0 Mines run late in the quarter gave them the lead back for the first time since the middle of the second as Bailey hit a jumper and three-pointer before
Courtney Stanton's mid-range jumper and Archambeau's final bucket made it 50-49 Mines with 2:02 to go.
USF answered with Lauren Sanders' three-pointer at the 1:09 mark, but Bailey's bucket with 48 seconds remaining tied it 52-52.
Both teams had turnovers on their next possessions, with Hummel coming up with a steal on Mines' final chance. USF called timeout and advanced the ball with four seconds to go, and that set up Harris, who took the inbound pass, moved around the key, drove the lane, and hit a falling layup as time expired to win it.
Mines will host East Central next Friday at 5 p.m.
