Mayberry Smashes Records In Mines Win

ALAMOSA, Colo. - Cameron Mayberry's record-shattering day led a huge Colorado School of Mines offensive effort in a 52-24 win at Adams State.

The Orediggers (6-4) produced 717 yards of total offense, including 498 yards rushing - the second-most in program history - to score the final 31 points of the game after a spirited first half left it tied 24-24.

Mayberry put on a show, running for a Mines single-game record 312 yards on 31 carries and hitting the end zone three times. He put up Madden numbers - literally. His performance pushed him past the oldest record in Mines football, Lloyd Madden's 1,316 rushing yards in 1939, and it snapped the single-game record that had stood since Greg Marshall ran for 229 yards against Fort Lewis in 1992. Mayberry now has 1,453 yards this season.

Zac Guy got in on the action too with 129 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Cody Limmer threw for 219 yards and two scores, both to Brody Oliver, while running for another.

Mines spotted Adams State an early 21-7 lead as part of a 35-point first quarter, with Nick Rooney throwing all three touchdowns - two to Chad Hovasse and another to Marquese Surrel - around Limmer's first to Oliver. Mines brought it back with Limmer's second pass to Oliver, and Guy got in from 14 yards out to tie it 21-21. The two teams then traded field goals to end the half, with Montana Gomez hitting 23 and Grayson Harris from 43 to make it 24-24 at the half.

The second half, however, would be pure Orediggers as they worked four long scoring drives to close it out. Mayberry capped a 79-yard possession with a one-yard run to take the lead midway through the third, then went 18 yards up the sideline to finish a 99-yard drive after an ASU punt pinned them at the half-yard line. Mayberry's third came from a yard out, this time completing a 98-yard drive, and Limmer's three-yard keeper late in the fourth sealed it at 52-24.

ASU had 467 yards of offense but only 57 on the ground as Rooney threw for 410 yards and Hovasse (162 yards) and Surrel (145 yards) had 100+ yard games. Only 99 of the Grizzlies' yards came in the second half. The Mines defense clamped down in the second half and was led by the secondary with Chase Nicholas notching a team-high eight tackles; Nick Angieri had six stops and four break-ups. Jimmy Bauer forced a fumble on a first-half strip sack, as well.

Mines returns home to end the season next Saturday, hosting Black Hills State at noon.
