DALLAS, Texas - For Colorado School of Mines, the goal was going to come. It just took a little longer than 90 minutes.
Peyton Sanders' golden goal 39 seconds into overtime pushed Mines past Midwestern State, 1-0, and into the NCAA Second Round with a deserved victory in the opening game of the 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship.
The Orediggers (16-3-1) outshot the Mustangs (11-8-1) by a 23-2 margin, controlling huge portions of the game but being stymied by a tough MSU defense and eight saves by goalkeeper Courtney Burnette.
Mines advances to Saturday's second round, facing the host Dallas Baptist at 1 p.m. Central/12 p.m. Mountain. It will be a rematch of last year's NCAA Second Round that ended scoreless, but saw Mines advance on penalty kicks at home.
In the end it was Sanders scoring her second career NCAA golden goal on a day where she was Mines' most dangerous offensive player. Sanders put a game-high four shots on goal, with the winner coming after
Haley Cole hit the post, and
Brooke Stoermer gave the rebound off to Sanders for the finish.
Mines had plenty of opportunities in regulation, including an early hit crossbar for
Nicole LaTourette and a header by Stoermer off the bar in the second half. Mines had eight corners to MSU's none.
Taylor McRae took a game-high five shots with Stoermer and Cole taking three each.
Shannon Mooney made one save to earn her first career NCAA shutout as the Mines backline held the Mustangs without a serious scoring opportunity.
The Orediggers went to overtime in NCAA play for the 10th time since 2009; they are 3-0-7 in those games, with Sanders also scoring a winner against Texas A&M-Commerce in last year's third round. They will face Dallas Baptist for the third consecutive season in the NCAA Tournament and fourth time overall; they are 1-1-1 against each other.
