Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines and CSU-Pueblo split a wild doubleheader on Saturday, as Mines pounded the Thunderwolves 14-2 in the opener before Pueblo used a seven-run fourth to win game two 11-10.
GAME ONE - Mines 14, CSU-Pueblo 2
Led by
Connor Lambert's 4-for-4, 4-RBI game, Mines generated 14 hits to score as many runs in a 14-2 win in the opener.
Colton Wardle drove in three and
A.J. Valerio delivered a complete-game win as Mines scored four in the first inning and never looked back. Lambert provided a two-run single to start things off, with
Joe Popp doing the same before Lambert drove in another run in the second to lead 5-0. Pueblo chipped away with two runs in the second, but Wardle's sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 6-2 before Mines really broke the game open with six runs in the sixth.
Wardle, Selsor, and Lambert each delivered RBI singles to start the rally before Popp drew a bases-loaded walk, and
Jared Rodriquez drove in another before
Walter Pennington made his first career hit an RBI triple in the seventh.
Caleb Thomas' RBI groundout was Mines' final run.
Valerio was superb, scattering seven hits with four strikeouts in the win. Jason Lighthall (2-1) was touched for six earned in the loss.
GAME TWO - CSU-Pueblo 11, Mines 10
A big fourth-inning by CSU-Pueblo made the difference as the Thunderwolves bounced back to take game two, 11-10.Â
Mines led 2-0 in the first thanks to RBI base hits from Wardle and Selsor, and
Logan Smith came home on a wild pitch in the third, but Pueblo answered back with three in the third to lead 4-3. Mines seemingly took control in the top of the fourth with five runs, including Smith's triple to score
Daniel Ciraula after Ciraula's two-run single, but Pueblo answered back with a huge seven-run bottom half to take the lead back.
Mines fought back with Smith's two-run single in the sixth to cut it to 11-10, but came up a run short as Pueblo held them off in the seventh.
Tyler Blomster took the start and went two innings, with
Mitch Menard taking the loss after throwing in the fourth. Zach Visinoni got the win out of the bullpen after starter Zach Hoffman only lasted an inning; Bret Ricklefs earned the save.
