SPEARFISH, S.D. - Yet another seventh-inning comeback in the opener and
Hallie Smith's shutout in the closer gave Colorado School of Mines the series sweep of Black Hills State.
The Orediggers (17-5, 14-2 RMAC) scored three runs with two outs in the seventh to win game one 3-1, with
Paige Noehring and
Sonoma Toot doing the damage, then
Kara Jones had all three RBI in game two to support Smith's six-strikeout shutout in game two.
GAME ONE - Mines 3, Black Hills State 1
Paige Noehring and
Sonoma Toot lifted the Orediggers to a comeback 3-1 win in the day's opener.
Mines trailed 1-0 heading into the seventh, with Stefanie Witman's fourth-inning single the game's only run. That changed in Mines' final at-bat as
Taylor Klauser reached on a one-out error to start the rally.Â
Brielle Asato pinch ran and stole second and third, and after Mines took its second out, Noehring's infield single tied the game at 1-1. Noehring stole second and moved to third on
Kelsey Buechler's single, and the bases were loaded on
Clara Larson's walk. That set up Toot's two-run double to the gap in left center, putting Mines ahead 3-1.
Hallie Smith entered in relief of
Claire Stringfellow and worked a quick bottom of the seventh, with a Leiker-Larson-Ludlow double play erasing a lead-off single for Witmer and Smith ringing up Katelyn Odle to end the game.
Stringfellow (7-1) had a terrific start, allowing only the one run and striking out five. Smith earned her fifth save of the season. Witmer (2-8) took the loss, striking out four but allowing no earned runs in her complete game.
GAME TWO - Mines 3, Black Hills State 0
Hallie Smith's shutout supported by
Kara Jones' three RBIs gave Mines the sweep in a 3-0 victory.
Smith had six strikeouts and issues only one walk as she scattered five hits to improve to 7-3.Â
Jones broke open a scoreless game in the fourth after
Katie Leiker's two-out single helped her score from Jones' double on the next at-bat. She added to the lead in the sixth with another two-out double, this time with Leiker and
Kara Walling on base, to lead 3-0. Smith took care of business from there to give Mines its sixth consecutive win.
Alex Wiley (1-9) allowed one earned on six hits for BHSU.
