GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines picked up a hard-earned split with Regis on Saturday, bouncing back from a 3-1 loss in the opener to win 3-0 on
Hallie Smith's shutout in game two.
The Orediggers (8-4, 5-1 RMAC) drilled nine hits in game one but couldn't get on the board until the seventh as their rally fell short against the Rangers' Logan Losh; in the nightcap, Smith was spectacular as she scattered four hits and the Mines defense backed her up with error-free play to win.
GAME 1 - Regis 3, Mines 1
Mines' seventh-inning fell short as Regis held on to win the first game of the doubleheader, 3-1.
The Rangers wasted no time going ahead as Carlie Sexton's single to plate Emily John put them up 1-0 in the first, and Delaney McGinn's two-run home run inside the leftfield foul pole made it 3-0 in the third.
Mines had plenty of scoring opportunities, stranding runners in scoring position in the second and third innings, but it took until the seventh for their hitting to pay off.
Loren Dempsey led off with a single and
Stefanie Brunello ran for her;
Paige Noehring later moved her over to third with a single, and
Clara Larson's single off the pitcher's glove scored Brunello. That put the winning run at the plate, but Losh induced a groundout to end the game.
Losh (9-3) allowed one earned and struck out seven.
Maddie Rogers (1-1) started and allowed two earned over two innings, with
Claire Stringfellow throwing five strong innings of relief with one run allowed.
GAME 2 - Mines 3, Regis 0
Hallie Smith threw her second shutout of the season to salvage the split in a 3-0 win in game two.
Sonoma Toot's RBI double in the fourth broke open a scoreless game, and
Kara Jones and
Pua Fujinaga added insurance runs in the sixth as the Orediggers recorded eight hits to back up Smith.
Smith retired the first eight batters she faced, but Regis starter Taylor Armitage was equally strong as Mines didn't get on the board until the fourth.
Dani Valerio led off with a first-pitch double, and Toot then hit her own two-bagger to bring her home for the 1-0 lead. That came after Valerio saved a run in the top of the fourth with an on-the-run catch into the fence in left with Regis threatening on second base.
Mines left two in scoring position in the fifth after singles by Fujinaga and
Kelsey Buechler, but put together together a big sixth inning to pad the lead. With two outs and Toot and
Katie Leiker on base, Jones singled in Toot and Fujinaga drove in Leiker on back-to-back plate appearances, ending Armitage's day. Reliever Cortney Sexton got the final out, and Smith then worked a quick seventh to pick up the win.
Smith (3-2) struck out two and did not allow a walk as she faced four over the minimum. Armitage (3-7) allowed three earned in the loss.
