Mines Breaks Out In 16-3 Win Over Adams State

GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines broke out for 16 runs off 21 hits, supporting a career-best start by Jake Englehart to rout Adams State 16-3.

The Orediggers (18-17, 10-12 RMAC) broke out of a seven-game slump that included a 35-inning scoreless streaking heading into the game. That lasted all of seven pitches as Logan Smith led off the game with a home run - his 200th career hit - to set the tone as Mines built an 11-0 lead through three innings.

Griffin Jones drove in four runs while Cody Marvel went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and Joe Popp was 3-for-4. Smith, Connor Lambert, Popp, and Jones each hit home runs as Popp came a double shy of the cycle.

Mines' bats backed up Englehart (3-0), who carried a perfect game into the fourth inning and struck out five through seven innings of work. Englehart scattered five hits and allowed one earned in his stint. Drew Burman and Michael Tanner each threw an inning of relief. Mines chased ASU started Daniel Brennan (1-6) in the third after he allowed six runs.

Smith's homer led off the scoring for Mines, and Jones' longball was a three-run shot in the second to make it 4-0. Cameron Maxey scored on a wild pitch to start a huge seven-run third as Popp's triple and singles by Marvel, Derek Daly, and Smith made it 9-0 before Smith scored on an error and Daly came across on a wild pitch to lead 11-0 after three.

ASU got on the board with Michael Downs' RBI single in the fourth but Mines continued to pile on, with Lambert's double in the fifth and Jones' groundout in the sixth scoring runs, Marvel coming across on a wild pitch, and Lambert and Popp jacking solo shots in the seventh to lead 16-1. ASU scored two unearned runs in the ninth.
