BRADENTON, Fla. -
Austin Smith earned the first decathlon all-America award in Colorado School of Mines history to highlight Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Smith finished eighth in the two-day, 10-event test with a point total of 6,885. It is his second all-America honor of the year after he also finished eighth in the heptathlon at NCAA Indoor Championships in March.Â
Smith had a consistent second day, opening eighth with a 15.80 time in the 110m hurdles before a career-best 37.29m (122-4) discus throw for fifth. He then cleared 4.20m (13-9.25), one notch under his PR, for ninth in the pole vault, and hit 43.04m (141-2) on his last throw for 12th in the javelin. In the 1,500m finale, Smith saved his best for last, popping a huge PR at 4:47.03 to finish ninth and secure eighth overall.
Mines' only other competitor on Friday was freshman
Kevin Thompson, who made his NCAA debut in the 800m. Thompson ran 1:58.10 for 19th place overall.
That wraps up the season for Mines, who finished NCAA Outdoors with three all-America honors - Smith,
Jake Pinkston (pole vault), and
Dan Mahoney (10,000m).
