Grotz Breaks Assist Record As Mines Beats Concordia

GOLDEN, Colo. - Nikolaus Grotz became Colorado School of Mines' career assists leader as the Orediggers held off 10-man Concordia-Portland 2-1 on Sunday.

The Orediggers evened their record at 2-2 courtesy of goals by Ashi Geberkidane and John Haist, and were unlucky to not get more as they played a man up after Concordia's Foster Gbogbo was sent off for a tackle from behind in the 27th minute.

Grotz's assist on Geberkidane's early goal took him past Tesho Akindele for the program lead at 34. Grotz has two assists this season, and ranks fourth all-time in RMAC history in the category.

Geberkidane's finish of Grotz's cross and Haist's flick in the fourth minute got Mines off and running, but Noah Swigart equalized in the 14th minute with a superb header in space from Paul Seydel. Haist got Mines back in front almost immediately, scoring his fourth goal of the weekend off Trevor Amann's cross in the 17th minute to put Mines up 2-1.

The Orediggers pushed from there, outshooting CU 20-2, but another goal never came despite pressure after Gbogbo's sending off. The Cavaliers nearly stole a tie in the closing moments, but Seydel's apparent goal with 2:13 remaining was disallowed for offsides.

Collin Hall earned the win without having to make a save for Mines. Benoit Boillant made seven saves for Concordia, including three breakaway stops to deny Mines.

The Orediggers begin RMAC play Friday night, visiting Colorado Mesa for a 7 p.m. start.
