GOLDEN, Colo. - #5 Colorado School of Mines clinched at least a share of its fifth RMAC regular-season championship in six years, putting on a defensive masterclass to defeat Regis 1-0 on Senior Day.
The Orediggers (15-1-1, 12-0-0 RMAC) won their 10th consecutive game as they limited the defending RMAC champion Rangers (7-5-3, 6-4-1 RMAC) to a single shot while riding a first-half
Jennifer Kendall penalty kick to victory. Although UCCS can still tie Mines for the RMAC lead should the Orediggers slip up in their final game, Mines clinched the RMAC Tournament #1 seed with Sunday's win by virtue of holding the head-to-head tiebreak over the Mountain Lions
Mines got off to a fast start with a first-minute corner and didn't let up in the first half as both teams worked to build possession early. Neither team had a great scoring chance until the 28th minute, when Kendall ran into the box and was taken down from behind to draw the penalty. The senior left no doubt in her conversion for her eighth goal of the year to put Mines up 1-0.
From there it was just a question of whether or not Mines would get another as
Nicole LaTourette volleyed off the post in the 43rd minute, and
Taylor McRae was stopped by Julia Coombs in the 73rd.Â
The Mines backline of
Dominique Rivera,
Emily Townsend, Kortney Descamp, and
Mickey Hostetler was unsolvable, holding Regis without a shot on goal and giving up just one total shot - a 60th-minute blocked attempt by Tori Rinsem - in the game.Â
