2018 Men's Soccer All-RMAC Teams
GOLDEN, Colo. – Junior defender
Jason Zobott was named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Year Tuesday with five other Orediggers earning All-RMAC honors for the Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team.
Joining Zobott as First-Team All-RMAC honorees were
John Haist and
Ben Overholt. The duo of
Ford Edwards and
Ryan Wilson claimed Second-Team All-RMAC accolades while
Drew Johnson took home All-RMAC Honorable Mention distinction. Mines' six-man contingency tied for the most representatives in the league.
Zobott's 2018 campaign came full circle after he was named Preseason RMAC Defensive Player of the Year in August and twice-named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week during the season. His numbers weren't gaudy in the box scores, but Zobott led the RMAC's most stifling defense. The Orediggers' backline led the league allowing just 12 goals in 18 matches with Zobott as the anchor. The Wisconsin native's guidance also helped Mines post the longest shutout streak in program history – spanning eight matches and 592:39 minutes of action. Zobott chipped in on offense with one assist. He finished the regular season with one point on 15 shots with four attempts on goal in 1,562 minutes played.
Haist was Mines' tip of the spear on offense. After being named Preseason RMAC Offensive Player of the Year, he proceeded to lead the conference in scoring with 46 points on 20 goals and six assists. He closed the regular season ranked #2 in NCAA Division II in game-winning goals, shots per game and shots on goal per game. Haist's regular-season performance helped continue his reign as the NCAA's active leading scorer across all divisions. The Englishman's regular-season campaign included two hat-tricks and five multi-goal games. Haist also moved into first place on Mines' all-time and single-season shots lists as well as single-season shots on goal. In the final game of the regular season, he tied Tesho Akindele (2010-13) with the 19th game-winning goal of his career.
Overholt's First-Team All-RMAC honor is the first of his career. The redshirt junior finished the regular season second on the team in scoring with five goals and six assists. He also notched three game-winning goals with a total of 50 shots and 23 shots on goal. Overholt tallied a goal and an assist in two different games this season. His game-winning goals came against St. Edward's in the season opener, at South Dakota Mines and at Adams State. Overholt now has six goals and 11 assists in his career.
Edwards' second-team appearance is the first All-RMAC recognition of his career. The junior from Parker, Colo. played a key role in the Orediggers' midfield, dishing out four assists and scoring three goals. He finished the regular season with 39 shots, bringing his career total to 74. Edwards put 15 of those attempts on frame and notched the game-winning tally at Cal State East Bay. The Colorado native started all 18 games for Mines and racked up 1,429 minutes of action. His season totals in goals, assists and shots mark career highs for the junior midfielder.
Wilson's second-team nod makes four Orediggers earning All-RMAC distinction for the first time in their careers. Playing alongside Zobott on Mines' backline, Wilson's offensive numbers included one goal and one assist. However, his acumen as a defender paid dividends as he helped the Orediggers record 10 shutouts in the regular season and assisted Zobott in leading Mines to its longest shutout streak in program history. Wilson finished second on the team in total minutes with 1,572 after earning Preseason All-RMAC honors. His assist came at home against Colorado Christian with his lone goal coming against South Dakota Mines in the Orediggers' regular-season home finale. Wilson attempted just 23 shots but put over 50 percent of those attempts on frame. His sophomore status makes him the youngest of Mines' six-man contingency.
Johnson's All-RMAC Honorable Mention award comes on the tails of a record-breaking season. The redshirt junior broke Mines' single-season shutouts record with nine in the regular season. He is currently tied for fifth in NCAA Division II in total shutouts and ranks #10 in the country with his 0.67 goals-against average. Johnson led the team with 1,611 minutes of action and recorded 50 saves on his way to 16-1-1 record. He finished the regular season leading the RMAC in shutouts and goals-against average after facing 177 shots over 18 games.
As a team, Mines clinched its eighth RMAC crown in program history with a week remaining in the regular season. The Orediggers went 16-1-1 overall and 13-0-1 in conference play while breaking the program record for longest shutout streak and longest winning streak. Mines currently boasts an unbeaten streak of 16 games as it enters the postseason. Ranked second in the South Central Region and #5 in the country, the Orediggers are a favorite to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The team ranks #1 in NCAA Division II in shots per game, #3 in shots on goal per game, #6 in win-loss percentage and #9 in total goals.
As the #1 seed in the RMAC Tournament, Mines will host the semifinal and final matches Nov. 2 and 4 at Stermole Stadium. The Orediggers will face the winner for fourth-seeded Regis against #5 UCCS. Live stats and video of all the RMAC Tournament matches will be available at www.MinesAthletics.com.
