GOLDEN, Colo. – The #16-ranked Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team scored late Sunday to claim a 1-0 win over Westminster at Stermole Stadium on the way to its 10th straight win.
John Haist converted from the spot for the Orediggers, tallying his 12th goal of the season. Goalkeeper
Drew Johnson made five saves for Mines as he earned his seventh shutout of the year.
Ben Overholt recorded a team-high three shots attempts with two on goal.
Talon Stanley,
Ford Edwards and
Ryan Wilson notched multiple attempts as well.
Mines (11-1-0, 8-0-0 RMAC) edged Westminster (9-2-1, 5-2-1 RMAC) in shots, 12-11 while the two teams tied 5-5 in attempts on frame. The Orediggers earn their fifth straight shutout as a team while the Griffins fall for the second time in their last four matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The early-morning kickoff saw a physical start to the match with 19 fouls and three yellow cards issued in the opening half. Westminster owned the opening period offensively with five shots to Mines's three. However, three first-half saves by Johnson sent the game into halftime knotted 0-0.
In the second half, whistles became few and far between as both teams looked to run and stretch the field. Mines earned its most important whistle of the match in the 87th minute as
Julian Kehe charged down the right side of the penalty area between two Westminster defenders. Contact between the trio brought Kehe to the ground and a whistle from the referee gave the Orediggers a much-needed penalty-kick opportunity. Haist stepped to the spot and converted with less than four minutes remaining in the match.
The Griffins would not surrender, bringing a late flurry of corner kicks with hopes of sending the game into overtime. However, Mines' back line, anchored by
Jason Zobott and Wilson, held strong as it allowed no shots on goal in the final seconds.
