2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Teams
GREENWOOD, Ind. – Ben Overholt and
Jason Zobott were named to the 2018 Google Cloud NCAA Division II Academic All-America Men's Soccer team Wednesday in recognition of their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.
Â
It marks the first time either Oredigger has earned Google Cloud Academic All-America honors. The announcement also gives the Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team its first Google Cloud Academic All-Americans since 2015 when Richard Garvey claimed first-team distinction. Overholt and Zobott are the fourth and fifth men's soccer players in Mines history to earn the prestigious award. The Orediggers tied for the second-most representatives on the 2018 squad.
Â
Overholt earned Google Cloud First-Team Academic All-America honors as an electrical engineering major boasting a 3.85 grade-point average. His accomplishments in the classroom also netted him Google Cloud Academic All-District and RMAC First-Team All-Academic distinction. On the field, Overholt was named United Soccer Coaches First-Team All-Region, D2CCA First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-RMAC. The redshirt junior finished second on the team in scoring with five goals and six assists. He also took the second-most shots and put the second-most on goal among all Orediggers with 61 total attempts and 26 on frame. The Littleton, Colo., native produced two matches in which he scored a goal and notched an assist while tallying three game-winning goals on the year.
Â
Zobott was named Google Cloud Second-Team Academic All-America thanks to a robust resume on the field and in the classroom. As a junior petroleum engineering major boasting a 3.88 GPA, Zobott was voted Google Cloud Academic All-District in 2017 and 2018 while also earning back-to-back RMAC First-Team All-Academic honors. The Illinois native's on-field accomplishments were equally impressive. In 2018 alone, Zobott was named D2CCA Second-Team All-America, United Soccer Coaches First-Team All-Region, D2CCA First-Team All-Region, RMAC Defensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-RMAC, RMAC All-Tournament, RMAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Preseason All-RMAC and RMAC Defensive Player of the Week multiple times. While his stats weren't gaudy, Zobott led a defense that produced the longest shutout streak in Mines history, spanning over 590 minutes and eight matches. The defender only notched one assist but helped the Orediggers' defense post the second-lowest goals against average in program history (0.70).
Â
In order to be considered for the Academic All-America squads, a student-athlete must carry a 3.3 or higher GPA as a sophomore or above and be a starter or significant contributor to their team. The nominee must also be voted First-Team Academic All-District.
