LARAMIE, Wyo. - Four placewinners highlighted the day as Colorado School of Mines competed at the Cowboy Open at the University of Wyoming on Saturday.
Connor Ventura was the runner-up in the Elite 184 bracket and
Jake Stogdill second in the Amateur 125 class, while
Ryan Fidel and
Drew Hinkle earned third-place spots at Amateur 157 and 174, respectively.
Ventura had a terrific day in the Elite 184 bracket, winning his first three matches including a sudden-victory decision over Wyoming's Carless Looney. Ventura's only loss came in the final to OTC developmental wrestler Aaron Brooks.
At 125, Stogdill also made a run to the final with four wins to start his day that included back-to-back first-period falls. He ran up against Northern Colorado's Jace Koelzer in a finals loss but ended up 4-1 on the day.
Fidel went 5-1 at the tournament with his only loss coming to a Division I competitor. Fidel started off 2-0 with a major and a fall before losing to Air Force's Trey Brisker; he then wrestled back with a 5-2 decision against Chadron State's Steven Lahnert, a tech fall over Western Wyoming's Sam Freeman, and a pin of Antony Kinsey of Northwest Tech to make the third-place match, which was called no contest. It was a similar story for Hinkle, who lost his opening match but reeled off four straight wins to place third at 174. That included a pair of falls against unattached competitors from Chadron State and Adams State.
Other highlights of the day included
Jake Woods going 2-2 in the Elite 125 bracket and
Anderson Salisbury picking up his first official Mines win at Amateur 184 in a 1-2 day.
Mines returns home Thursday for a 7 p.m. dual against Northeastern JC.
