GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines picked up a pair of big RMAC dual wins on Friday, upsetting #13 Chadron State 24-11 before cruising past San Francisco State 32-6.
Mines (4-0) was led by 2-0 nights from
Matt Lavengood,
Lukas Erickson,
Keenan Willits, and
Robert Gambrell; Lavengood and
Noah Au-Yeung both scored wins over nationally-ranked opponents.Â

MINES 24, #13 CHADRON STATE 11
Mines got their evening started with an upset of #13 Chadron State, keyed by bonus-point wins by Lavengood and Gambrell and a dramatic overtime victory from
Ryan Fidel.
Lavengood dominated at 125 pounds with a 14-1 major decision over Clayton Eagle, but Brandon Kile beat Au-Yeung at 133 before Erickson topped Chance Karst 8-6 at 141 to give Mines a 7-3 lead. #5 Chase Clasen was held to a decision by
Noah Ottum, 7-2, at 149, and Fidel won the match of the night at 157, using a late takedown and penalty point in regulation to force sudden victory, where he took down Jake Otuafi to win 8-6.
Mines racked up three straight wins after that to secure the meet as Willits beat John Porter 6-0 at 165, Gambrell teched Tate Allison 16-0 at 174, and
TJ Shelton worked a 7-4 decision against Heber Shepherd at 184. #10 Wade French got a technical fall over
Anthony Spallino at 197, but it didn't matter with the meet in hand, and
Weston Hunt's last-second takedown won the heavywight bout with Rulon Taylor.
The win was Mines' third in a row over a top-25 team dating back to last season.Â

MINES 32, SAN FRANCISCO STATE 6
The Orediggers ended their day by winning the first seven bouts to race out to a big lead and beat San Francisco State, 32-6.
The Gators, who were receiving votes in the most recent NWCA Top 25 poll, won only two matches as Mines scored wins over both of SFSU's nationally-ranked wrestlers to start off. Lavengood used a late takedown and a penalty point to upset #9 Brandon Vu at 125 pounds, 9-7, and a clash of top-10 grapplers didn't disappoint at 133 as Au-Yeung beat #10 Jordan Gurrola 5-4 in overtime. Au-Yeung got the riding time point to force overtime at 3-3, and after a scoreless sudden victory, Au-Yeung reversed Gurrola from the bottom to lead 5-4 after Gurrola escaped. Au-Yeung then rode out the second 30-second tiebreaker to win.
The wins kept coming as Erickson beat Christian Ramos in a 12-4 major, Ottum topped Isiah Alva 5-2, and
Skyler Lykins dropped Romeo Medina 11-7, and Willits earned six points by forfeit at 165. Gambrell then beat Kurtis Clem at 174 12-1 to seal things up; Mines' final win came at heavyweight as
Brandon Saunders pinned Antonio Gomez at 1:57.
