GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines has awarded degrees to 32 current and former student-athletes as part of its midyear commencement ceremonies held Dec. 14 at Lockridge Arena.
Of the 31 Orediggers walking across the stage, 25 earned bachelor's degrees, six master's degrees and one a doctorate. The incredibly accomplished class was led by women's soccer's
Jennifer Kendall and football's
Brody Oliver, who were selected as the President's Senior Scholar Athlete Award recipients. The award is given to one male and one female graduating student-athlete who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and the leadership qualities of an exemplary student-athlete; both Kendall and Oliver were selected as Academic All-Americans this season.
Football's
Levi Cecil was named the Economic and Business department's Outstanding Graduating Senior, while nine seniors graduated with honors, including Kendall (summa cum laude) and Cecil, golf's
Eric Marshall, and basketball's
Ben Sonnefeld (magna cum laude).
Athletically, an impressive 28 of the 32 graduates have won RMAC championships, and 26 have competed in the NCAA Championships as an individual or with their teams. The group includes five all-Americans (
Hunter Arnell,
Matthew Kade,
Connor McLean, and
Ryan Morningstar from track & field and Oliver for football), two Academic All-Americans and RMAC Academic Players of the Year (Kendall and Oliver), and 19 all-RMAC selections.
Four of the graduates are in the midst of their seasons and will continue competing as graduate students: men's basketball's
Ben Sonnefeld, golf's
Eric Marshall, and track & field's
Ali Artzberger and
Connor McLean. Former women's soccer goalkeeper Amy Hegarty, a member of the program's first RMAC Tournament championship squads in 2011 and 2012, earned her doctorate in mechanical engineering having already earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Mines.
As has become tradition, the student-athletes helped end each ceremony by leading the the crowd in "The Mining Engineer" fight song. The current and former Mines student-athletes who earned degrees in Fall 2018 are:
