Brody Oliver have been named to the Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-America teams for their combination of outstanding athletic and academic achievement in 2018.
Keating earned a coveted first-team spot as one of four defensive backs selected, while Oliver earned one of two second-team wide receiver slots. The pair are the 14th and 15th Academic All-Americans in Mines football history; the program has had at least one Academic All-American in each of the past nine seasons.
Keating, a redshirt junior, was Mines' second-leading tackler in 2018 as a standout at safety. Keating compiled 59 total tackles (30 solo) to go with 6.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. He co-led Mines with two interceptions, with picks against Adams State and CSU-Pueblo, and also had a forced fumble against CSU-Pueblo in the regular season and a fumble recovery at Dixie State. He was second on the team with seven pass break-ups, as well. His top overall production games were both against CSU-Pueblo; in the regular season he had eight tackles, 1.5 for a loss, with a pick and a forced fumble; in the NCAA Championship First Round he made a career-high nine tackles with one for a loss and a PBU. Keating is a mechanical engineering major with a 3.94 GPA.
Oliver, a redshirt senior, left his mark as Mines football's best wide receiver with a phenomenal senior season. A D2CCA First-Team All-Region selection, Oliver was also named RMAC Offensive Academic Player of the Year and First-Team All-RMAC In the regular season, he led NCAA Division II in receiving touchdowns (20) and was fifth in receiving yards per game (121.2) and fourth in scoring (12.0 ppg). Oliver compiled 1,339 yards on 73 catches with 21 total touchdowns, and his career numbers were record-setting, with his 59 touchdowns standing as an RMAC record and his 4,010 yards a new Mines mark and second all-time in conference history. His top games in 2018 were a 198-yard, 5-touchdown performance against Adams State in which he tied the NCAA record for touchdowns in a quarter with four; a four-touchdown, 127-yard day at Fort Lewis; and a 174-yard, two-touchdown performance at Black Hills State. Oliver is a metallurgical and materials engineering major with a 3.34 GPA, and is a degree candidate at Mines' mid-year Commencement ceremony on Friday.
